In a nostalgic nod to both Swedish and Australian culinary traditions, IKEA is marking its 50th anniversary in Australia with the launch of the Meatball Party Pie, a quirky, limited-edition snack that fuses two cultural icons: the classic Aussie party pie and IKEA’s world-famous Swedish meatball.
Available free for IKEA Family members in all 10 stores across the country on Saturday, May 31, the Meatball Party Pie is IKEA’s way of saying thank you to the millions of Australians who have welcomed the brand into their homes since it first opened its doors in 1975.
Wrapped in a flaky golden crust, the pie is filled with the traditional ingredients of IKEA’s Swedish meatballs—served with rich gravy and topped with a hint of Swedish lingonberry jam. A plant-based version, using IKEA’s popular plant balls, will also be available, ensuring all customers can enjoy the festivities.
Introduced in 1985, IKEA’s meatballs have become a fan favorite globally and especially in Australia, where three million plates were served last year alone. “Australians have embraced our food as much as our home furnishings,” said Tim Prevade, country food manager at IKEA Australia. “The Meatball Party Pie is a flavour-packed celebration that brings together the comfort of an Aussie classic with the unmistakable taste of our Swedish roots.”
The pies were developed in collaboration with Loftus Pies, a local supplier based in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire. Chief Pie Officer John Tsoutsas described the experience as “remarkable,” adding, “We spent time perfecting the balance of meatball, gravy, and pastry. It’s not something we’ve done before—but we believe Australians will love it.”
The celebratory weekend, running from Friday, May 30 to Monday, June 2, is IKEA’s biggest event yet in Australia. In addition to the limited-edition pies, customers can enjoy:
- 50c IKEA hot dogs on May 31 and June 1
- 50% off the iconic POÄNG armchair (for IKEA Family members, in-store and online)
- A range of in-store activities, giveaways, and exclusive product launches
To sample the Meatball Party Pie, customers simply need to present their IKEA Family membership. Those not yet signed up can register for free online or through the IKEA app.
As IKEA turns the page on half a century in Australia, it’s clear the brand continues to blend affordability, tradition, and a playful spirit—with a party pie that’s anything but ordinary.
